Strong Evidence On Bone Broth Nutrients & Acid Reflux

Do you feel burning sensations in your chest after you eat?

How about difficulty swallowing, chronic sore throat, or hoarseness during the morning hours?

All of these can be symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), commonly known as Acid Reflux.

There are many possible causes of GERD –– ranging from:

  • Smoking
  • Laying down after eating
  • Too much pressure on the abdomen from pregnancy or being overweight
  • Consumption of dairy, spicy foods, fried foods, or caffeine (which relaxes muscles that allow stomach acid to travel up your esophagus)

Obviously, we’re not doctors, and we’re in no position to diagnose you with GERD or tell you how to treat it.

With that said, we’re always on the lookout for solid studies that point towards relief. (Especially when they involve nutrients in bone broth.)

That’s why we were intrigued by a 2013 randomized controlled trial published in the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences.

Normally, when you are suffering from GERD, the doctor might suggest a Proton Pump Inhibitor (such as Prilosec) to lower the amount of acid your stomach makes.

However, for individuals with a unique form of reflux called non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) that common treatment doesn’t work very well.

So –– for this study –– researchers gathered 20 patients who were experiencing these stubborn NERD symptoms.

10 of them were given a placebo for the 14-day study. The others were given a melt-in-mouth adhesive strip containing Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Sulfate (which are nutrients found in bone broth.)

The results were impressive:

Two weeks later, every patient taking the HA+CS treatment saw a significant reduction in the intensity of their heartburn and acid regurgitation symptoms.

And 50% saw their reflux symptoms disappear altogether.

By comparison, only 10% of patients who took the placebo saw their symptoms disappear.

60% of the treatment patients also felt it taking action in under 30 minutes –– versus just 30% of the placebo group.

The researchers concluded: “A fixed combination of HA + CS has demonstrated to be effective in gastroesophageal reflux control, with a rapid onset of action.”

Now, we can’t necessarily extrapolate the results of this study (which, again, used a melt-in-mouth adhesive strip) to bone broth.

For that, we would need a study that specifically tested bone broth: something that has never been done.

What we can tell you is that every pouch of Broth Masters contains meaningful amounts of Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin Sulfate. In fact, we use grass fed and pasture-raised bones and simmer them for 48 hours to get those exact nutrients into the broth for you.

And we often hear from customers after they put it to the test:

“The best broth you can buy! I have one or two cups of broth per day and I love it. It has a rich, homemade taste that is far superior to any other broth on the market. I have struggled with acid reflux for years and it is much improved after adding this broth to my daily routine.” - Donna B
