Bone Broth Concerns Addressed: Heavy Metals, Sodium, and Histamines Solved by Broth Masters

In recent years, bone broth has gained a lot of attention for its health benefits, but it has also come under scrutiny. Concerns about heavy metals, high sodium levels, and histamine buildup have raised questions about how safe and nutritious bone broth really is. At Broth Masters, we’ve taken these concerns to heart. As a small, artisan producer, we’ve gone the extra mile to ensure our broth is not only delicious but also something you can feel good about serving to your family.

1. Heavy Metals in Bones

The Concern:

Heavy metals like lead and arsenic can end up in bones through contaminated soil and water, making their way into bone broth. When cows graze on grass grown in polluted environments or drink tainted water, these toxins can accumulate in their bodies.

Our Approach:

When we learned about the potential for heavy metals in bone broth, we didn’t hesitate. Before submitting our broth for nutritional testing, we went ahead and requested additional testing for heavy metals . The results? Not a trace of heavy metals was found.

We’ve always sourced our bones from one trusted farmer. This relationship goes back years, and we know the care and attention that goes into raising their grass-fed cattle. Because of this trust, we’ve never needed to test repeatedly—it’s the kind of confidence that comes with knowing exactly where your ingredients come from.

2. High Sodium Levels

The Concern:

Many commercially prepared bone broths contain excessive sodium to enhance flavor, particularly in commercially produced shelf stabilized broths. Some brands reaching over 800 mg of sodium per cup!  That’s a lot, especially for people watching their sodium intake. Always check nutritional lables.

How We’re Different:

At Broth Masters, we let the ingredients speak for themselves. We don’t rely on salt to flavor our broth. Instead, we use a carefully balanced combination of vegetables and herbs, and we’re careful never to overcook them.

Our broth contains just 150 mg of sodium per cup, and that’s naturally occurring—primarily from the celery we use. This allows the true, clean flavors to shine through without compromising on health.

3. High Histamine Levels

The Concern:

Bone broth is often simmered for long periods, which can lead to higher histamine levels. For people with histamine intolerance, this can cause issues like headaches, fatigue, or even skin flare-ups.

Our Thoughtful Process:

We’ve taken steps to minimize this. After we finish making each batch of broth, we freeze it immediately. This locks in freshness and helps prevent histamine buildup. It’s a small step, but it makes a big difference for those with sensitivities.

Why We Care:

We started Broth Masters because we believe in the healing power of real food made the right way. Every batch of broth we make is a reflection of that belief. From the way we source our bones to how we prepare, test, and package our broth, it’s all done with intention and care.

When you choose Broth Masters, you’re choosing a broth that’s made with integrity. It’s free of heavy metals, naturally low in sodium, and crafted with sensitivity to your health needs.

We hope you enjoy every sip of our broth as much as we enjoy making it for you.
